5 Ways to celebrate International Women’s Day a little differently this year

Let's start at the beginning: Almost 160 years ago, on March 8, 1857, garment workers in the textile mills of New York took to the streets in organized protest, demanding better working conditions and equal rights for women.

International Women's Day was however only officially celebrated for the first time 52 years later in 1909. Under the auspices of the UN put under the auspices of the International Women's Day, to record and fulfillment of all women's rights in every corner of the world. In fact, a total of 27 countries, this international day with special significance, celebrated as a public holiday!

And, here’s how you can celebrate women this 2016:

  1. Back for a third year to celebrate International Women’s Day, the “UNDP 2016 Women’s Film Week’, running from 7 to 12 March and taking place in the cities of Nicosia, Larnaca and Famagusta, is a festival dedicated to bringing you 14 films and real stories of women across the globe, highlighting the challenges faced by many the world over. Give it a try!
  2. Definitely read the bestseller "My name is Malala", written by the now 18 year old Malala Yousafzai, nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, who in 2012 stood up against the Taliban in northern Pakistan for the rights of all women to receive an education.
  3. Watch the movie "Girl Rising". This 2014 documentary chronicles the brave stories of nine girls from different parts of the world who – through education – were able to escape incredibly violent and other heartbreaking situations.
  4. Learn about the "Girl Effect" movement, which strives to lift girls out of poverty by giving them the critical tools they need to fulfill their dreams and aspirations.
  5. Cook ethnic recipes from the book "Share-The Cookbook". Filled with recipes from women living in areas affected by war, humanitarians like Nelson Mandela, famous actors such as Judi Dench and Emma Thompson, entrepreneurs like Richard Branson, and singers such as Annie Lennox and Paul McCartney, all of the publisher’s profit will go to "Women for Women International", which from 1993 to date, has helped and provided support to more than 429,000 marginalized women from war-torn countries.
