Every Day is Earth Day!

On April 22nd the world celebrates Earth Day!

We understand the importance in protecting the environment!  So in celebration of Earth Day, we would like to share with you some easy earth-friendly ways to make every day Earth Day!

Get planting: Nature doesn’t only make our landscape prettier, it also gives us a better quality of life!  So start dabbling in some gardening! Whether it’s on your terrace or in your garden, just know that the more we plant, the bigger and more beneficial impact we have on the environment. Trees help us breath better after all, absorbing and breaking down carbon dioxide and turning it into the oxygen we all need.

Clean out your closet and donate old clothes: The natural resources that are exploited in the production of clothes and shoes is unbelievable, mainly because it's a process that requires high levels of energy and water consumption, wrecking damage to the environment. So with so many people in desperate need of clothing but not having the financial means to buy them, donating any old clothing to them is a brilliant way of celebrating Earth Day and protecting out planet!

Become a vegetarian or vegan for a day: If you are already a vegetarian or fasting, then this tip may not be for you. But imagine if thousands if not millions of people decided to not meat, even for a day - the incredible good that it would do for the environment is phenomenal.  Why? The production of beef (per calorie) is responsible for the release of 5 times the amount of gasses that cause the greenhouse effect and six times the amount of nitrogen that dirties our water than some other well known pollutants – a scary statistic!

Go walking in nature: Take a walk in the forests of Troodos, or even a walk in one of your city’s parks as a way of celebrating Earth Day. Get out, breathe fresh air, feel the sun on your cheeks, and get your fill of vitamin D!

Use eco-friendly bags when you go shopping: Did you know that plastic shopping bags are produced in a single second, are used for no more than approximately 20 minutes but can pollute the environment for hundreds of years? For this reason, take measures to protect the environment by utilizing reusable shopping bags for your groceries, instead of plastic.  At METRO, our love for the earth triggered the introduction of the reusable METRO earth-friendly shopping bag made from a recyclable material called jute.  The bag is offered in two sizes and can be obtained for free with every 200 points earned using your METRO Card, or can be purchased for only € 2.
