5 Ways to Avoid Sunstroke

Temperatures today are climbing to dangerously high levels and sun burns as well as the risk of sunstroke is a major problem! We give you 5 simple ways to protect yourself in the sun!

1.  Avoid too much sun!

Your primary concern should be to avoid excessive sun exposure, particularly between the hours of 11am - 5pm.  Where you can, stay in the shade where the temperature is cooler. If you live in a city and have some free time, take a stroll through the mall and enjoy coffee in a café, out of the sun, in the coolness of air conditioning! Alternatively, go for a walk in the park that is shaded by trees.

2.  Dress appropriately!

This means don’t wear black or very dark clothing, or clothing made from synthetic fibers. Select loose fitting clothes that are pale in colour and made from 100% cotton or linen. Loose fitting means you allow more air to circulate around your body, keeping you cooler.  If you’re out and about, don’t forget to wear a hat.

3.  Drink lots of refreshing water!

Probably one of the key things to remember for the treatment and prevention of both sunstroke and survival during the summer! Drink as much water as you can, ideally two liters a day (this amount includes coffee in moderation of course, fresh juices, smoothies and even water detox combinations that you can find here).

4.  Beware of medication!

If you are taking medicine, you need to exercise extreme caution. Some of these drugs inhibit the body's ability to sweat or regulate its temperature in high temperatures. So be proactive and consult your doctor or pharmacist to find out more about the side effects of these meds.

5.  Take it easy!

Its summer, temperatures are dangerously high, so avoid exercise during the hours of the day when when the sun’s rays are at their fiercest. This also includes other activities such as furniture transportation, gardening, etc. Wait for the temperature to drop!
