7th of April is World Health Day and to celebrate, we're bringing you 4 easy ways to feel healthier and have more energy – and that can be incorporated into your everyday life!
1. Giving water flavor!
You already know that the consumption of water is beneficial for the body. And yet, water is something that we often forget to drink. One way to get into the habit of increasing water consumption in a way that makes it enjoyable is to give the water good flavor! By adding add fruit or vegetables into water and refrigerating it overnight will make your water that much tastier and therefore more appealing to drink. Here are some great flavor combinations:
- Sliced Cucumber and Lemon with Mint Leaves - this is a great mix for detoxing and for reducing fat around the abdomen. For that something extra, add 1 tablespoon of fresh ginger.
- Slice Pear with Berries and a few sprigs of Rosemary - this combination does wonders for reducing stress, strengthening the immune system and increasing blood flow to the brain.
- Sliced Apple and Cinnamon - a perfect detox combo!
2. Sleep!
Although there are no set rules for how long one should sleep at night being that no one person is the same and ever body has different needs, it is beneficial that going to bed even 30 minutes earlier than usual will do your body more good than you think.
Firstly, going to bed earlier will help you maintain your weight. Lack of sleep makes you crave foods with more salt, fat and sugar so as to get a quick (but false) spike of energy. Secondly, by giving your body the opportunity to sleep longer, you reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart problems, high blood pressure, diabetes and stroke.
3. Integrate movement into your life!
We are made to use our body! Unfortunately today's lifestyle does not do much by way of helping us move about. Too much sitting about, be it at work or on the couch watching TV, does the body a lot of harm. To combat these sedentary habits, try to integrate movement into your every day life.
A 30 minute run or fast walk (in one of the city's parks or the countryside - away from exhaust fumes- 3 to 5 times a week (but preferably every day) is perfect! Where you can, walk instead of drive, for e.g. walk to work or to your local coffee shop. Choose the stairs instead of the elevator. If you work in an office, get up every half hour and walk around a little. When you go out, park a little further away you’re your destination and walk.
4. Create a small garden!
It is the season for planting flowers! And what better way to do this than by planting them on our balconies. Especially those aromatic herbs that add great flavor to your food? Using flower pots or boxes, plant basil, coriander, tarragon, dill, sage, rosemary, oregano and thyme. All they will need is plenty of sun, the right quality soil and sufficient water. Also a very easy way to have your home smelling fresh and fragrant (preservative free!).
